Radical and determined, Paula Modersohn-Becker fought against numerous obstacles to claim her place in the art world, developing a powerful visual language far ahead of its time. Even 150 years after her birth, contemporary women artists see her as an important role model and enduring source of inspiration.
Around 1900, Modersohn-Becker purposefully forged her path between Worpswede and Paris, focusing on themes central to her work: self-determination, physicality, motherhood, and artistic freedom. Experts contextualize these aspects and reveal the structural barriers women in the arts faced then and continue to face today, as well as the social expectations that constrained her—despite her unwavering commitment to her artistic vision.
“Paula Modersohn-Becker. No Compromises” shows how her work has steadily grown in significance and now enjoys wide national and international recognition, while engaging with enduring issues such as visibility, equality, and artistic self-determination.
